Multiplayer & Co-op Issues

HighSince Early Access

Multiplayer Not Working / Can't Join Friend's Game

Cause: Version mismatch, NAT type issues, or invite code not properly shared.

Solution

  1. Verify both players are on the same game version (check title screen)
  2. Use invite codes instead of direct IP connection
  3. Host should check server is running: Main Menu → Host Game → Start Server
  4. If on different networks, host may need to port forward (default port 7777)
  5. Try using a dedicated server with Docker support (added in Patch 0.10.0.7)
  6. Check Co-op Planner for proper crew setup
MediumSince Patch 0.10.0.6

Co-op Desync / Rubberbanding

Cause: Network latency causing position desync between players.

Solution

  1. Host should have a stable internet connection with low ping
  2. Reduce in-game view distance in Settings → Graphics
  3. Avoid large ship battles with 3+ players until optimized
  4. Host should restart server every 2-3 hours to clear memory

Save & Progression Issues

HighSince Early Access

Save File Lost / Progress Disappeared

Cause: Early Access save system is still being improved. Crashes can corrupt save files.

Solution

  1. Always quit to Main Menu before closing the game
  2. Back up your save folder regularly: %LOCALAPPDATA%/Windrose/Saved
  3. If save is corrupted, try restoring from backup before starting a new game
  4. In co-op, only the host's world saves. Guests keep character level and inventory
  5. Report persistent save issues on the Community Corrections page

Missing Quest / Quest Stuck

Cause: Quest triggers may fail after patch updates or if NPCs are killed.

Solution

  1. Check Patch Notes to see if the quest was changed in a recent update
  2. Try logging out and back in to reset NPC positions
  3. If an NPC was killed, they may respawn after 24 in-game hours
  4. For 'I Need a Bigger Boat' quest: make sure Doctor Galen is alive
  5. Submit a report on Community Corrections with quest name

Performance & Graphics

MediumSince Early Access

Low FPS / Game Stuttering

Cause: Windrose is not fully optimized yet. Large bases and many ships can reduce performance.

Solution

  1. Lower Graphics Quality in Settings → Graphics (Medium recommended)
  2. Reduce View Distance to Medium or Low
  3. Disable Shadows if below 30 FPS
  4. Close other applications to free RAM (8GB minimum, 16GB recommended)
  5. Update GPU drivers to latest version
  6. If using integrated graphics, add Windrose to high-performance apps in Windows Settings
HighSince Early Access

Game Crashes / Freezes

Cause: Memory leaks, unoptimized code, or hardware compatibility issues in Early Access.

Solution

  1. Verify game files integrity: Steam → Right-click Windrose → Properties → Local Files → Verify
  2. Update to latest GPU drivers (NVIDIA/AMD)
  3. Close all background apps before launching
  4. If crash on startup, try running as Administrator
  5. If crash during ship combat, it may be related to Patch 0.10.0.8 projectile fix. Try lowering ship count
  6. Check crash logs in %LOCALAPPDATA%/Windrose/Saved/Logs

Controls & Input

LowSince Early Access

Controller Not Working / No Input

Cause: Controller support is limited in Early Access. Some controllers may not be recognized.

Solution

  1. Connect controller before launching the game
  2. Try Steam Input: Steam → Settings → Controller → Enable Steam Input
  3. For Xbox controllers: install Xbox Accessories app from Microsoft Store
  4. For PlayStation controllers: use DS4Windows or Steam's PlayStation support
  5. Keyboard + Mouse is the recommended input method for Windrose

Server & Dedicated Server

MediumSince Patch 0.10.0.7

Dedicated Server Setup Issues

Cause: Docker support was added in Patch 0.10.0.7. Configuration can be tricky.

Solution

  1. Install Docker and Docker Compose on your server
  2. Pull the official Windrose server Docker image
  3. Configure WorldDescription.json with correct settings
  4. Open ports 7777 (game) and 27015 (query) on your firewall
  5. For Linux servers, ensure you have proper user permissions
  6. Check the server console for error messages on startup
