Captain Richards ambushed your mentor at sea and stole the family's heirloom cutlass. The Tavern Keeper gives you a letter and a rusty compass pointing to his hideout in the Coastal Jungle. This quest teaches the core combat loop and unlocks the Foothills biome — the gateway to mid-game content.

Speak to the Old Tavern Keeper in Tortuga (J8-S6). He gives you a Rusty Compass and an old letter.
Use the compass — it guides you to coordinates D5-N8 in the Coastal Jungle. Look for a skeleton shipwreck with a black flag.
Captain Richards is level 6 with 4,000 HP. He uses a Saber and Flintlock. Bring 3 Health Potions and a Copper Sword.
After defeating him, loot the Heirloom Cutlass from his chest. This is your first unique weapon.
Bring the cutlass back to the Tavern Keeper. He unlocks the Foothills biome and gives you 50 Iron Ingots + 500 Piastre.
Killing Richards gives +100 Brethren of the Coast reputation. This unlocks Brethren-specific vendor items.
