Worker NPCs are the backbone of an efficient base in Windrose. These specialist NPCs automate resource processing, manufacturing, and crafting — turning your base from a manual crafting station into a self-sustaining production facility. Once properly set up, a fully automated base can produce cannon ammunition, refined building materials, food supplies, and alchemical products while you are out sailing, trading, or fighting. This guide covers every specialist worker, how to unlock them, how to build their workstations, and how to chain their outputs into efficient automated production lines.
The Worker NPC System Overview
There are four specialist Worker NPCs in Windrose, each with a unique profession and production focus. To hire a worker, you must first find them in the world, complete their unlock quest, and then build their assigned workstation at your base. Once the workstation is built and within bonfire radius, you can assign the worker to it, and they will begin producing goods automatically.
How Hiring Works
- Locate the specialist NPC in the world. Each specialist is found in a specific location and requires you to complete a short quest or meet certain conditions before they agree to join your crew.
- Build their workstation at your base. The workstation must be within the bonfire's light radius. Each workstation has specific material requirements that scale with the workstation's tier.
- Assign the worker by interacting with the workstation. The worker will appear at the workstation and begin production automatically.
- Supply raw materials to the workstation's input storage. Workers process raw materials into finished products — they do not gather resources themselves.
- Collect finished products from the workstation's output storage. Output storage has a limited capacity, so you need to empty it periodically to prevent production from stalling.
Workers do NOT gather resources. They only process raw materials that you place in their workstation's input storage. If you want automated cannonball production, you still need to mine Iron Ore yourself or buy it from merchants. The worker converts the ore into usable cannonballs — the gathering is your job.
All Four Specialist Workers
Here is a complete overview of all four specialist NPCs, their locations, unlock conditions, and what they produce:
| Worker | Profession | Location | Unlock Condition | Primary Output |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alchemist Mira | Alchemist | Ember Bay, upper cliffs | Complete quest "The Missing Reagents" | Potions, Refined Materials, Dyes |
| Armorer Gorm | Armorer | Ironveil Outpost, forge district | Complete quest "Steel and Stone" | Armor, Weapons, Metal Components |
| Cook Thara | Cook | Tidewatch Harbor, market pier | Bring 10 Scallops and 5 Cloth Scraps | Cooked Food, Rations, Buff Meals |
| Gunpowder Expert Dex | Gunpowder Expert | Sunken Hollow, cavern entrance | Complete quest "Boomtown" | Gunpowder, Fire Shot, Repair Kits |
Worker 1: Alchemist Mira
The Alchemist is arguably the most versatile worker in the game. Mira can process raw materials into refined versions, craft potions that provide combat buffs, and create dyes used in cosmetic customization. Her most valuable output for traders is the ability to refine raw commodities into higher-value goods.
Unlock Location and Quest
Mira is found on the upper cliffs of Ember Bay, accessible via a winding path on the eastern side of the port. To unlock her, you must complete "The Missing Reagents," a quest that tasks you with gathering 5 Moonpetal Flowers (found in the Coastal Jungle at night) and 3 Cave Moss (found in Foothills caves). Return the reagents to Mira, and she will agree to join your base.
Workstation: Alchemy Lab
The Alchemy Lab is Mira's workstation. Building it requires:
- Tier 1: Planks x20, Copper Ingots x10, Glass Bottles x5
- Tier 2: Planks x40, Copper Ingots x20, Glass Bottles x10, Silver Ingots x5
- Tier 3: Planks x60, Silver Ingots x15, Glass Bottles x20, Gold Ingot x1
Production Outputs
| Input Material | Output Product | Processing Time | Value Increase |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raw Salt x5 | Refined Salt x3 | 30 seconds | +140% (5g to 12g) |
| Raw Herbs x3 | Health Potion x1 | 45 seconds | Consumable (75 HP restore) |
| Iron Ore x3 | Iron Polish x1 | 60 seconds | Weapon upgrade material |
| Moonpetal Flower x2 | Night Vision Elixir x1 | 90 seconds | Consumable (5 min buff) |
| Berry Bundle x5 | Dye (random color) x1 | 20 seconds | Cosmetic item |
The Alchemist's Refined Salt production is the single most profitable passive income source in the game for traders. Buy Raw Salt at Tidewatch for 5g each, process it at the Alchemy Lab, and sell Refined Salt at Ember Bay for 12g each. That is a 140% profit increase on top of the base trading margin. Set up a dedicated worker for salt refining and you will never run out of gold.
Worker 2: Armorer Gorm
Gorm is your weapons and armor specialist. He produces metal components needed for ship upgrades, crafts wearable armor with stat bonuses, and can forge weapons that are superior to what the basic Workbench offers. His most important output for mid-game progression is the Metal Components used in ship upgrades — without an Armorer, you must craft these manually at the Forge, which is significantly slower.
Unlock Location and Quest
Gorm is located in the forge district of Ironveil Outpost, in the northeast Foothills. To unlock him, complete "Steel and Stone," which requires you to deliver 10 Iron Ingots and 5 Copper Ingots to Gorm's current forge. These materials are consumed by the quest — you do not get them back. Make sure you have surplus before starting the quest.
Workstation: Armorer's Forge
The Armorer's Forge is a heavy industrial station. Building it requires:
- Tier 1: Planks x30, Iron Ingots x15, Stone Bricks x20
- Tier 2: Planks x50, Iron Ingots x30, Stone Bricks x40, Steel Ingots x10
- Tier 3: Planks x70, Steel Ingots x25, Stone Bricks x60, Coal x30
Production Outputs
| Input Material | Output Product | Processing Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Iron Ingot x3 | Metal Components x1 | 45 seconds | Used in ship upgrades and cannon crafting |
| Iron Ingot x5 + Leather x2 | Iron Armor (chest) x1 | 120 seconds | +15% damage reduction |
| Steel Ingot x3 + Wood x2 | Steel Sword x1 | 90 seconds | 65 base damage, Tier 2 weapon |
| Copper Ingot x2 + Coal x1 | Brass Fitting x2 | 30 seconds | Used in sail upgrades |
| Steel Ingot x5 + Metal Components x2 | Steel Plate x1 | 150 seconds | Hull Tier 3 upgrade material |
Worker 3: Cook Thara
Thara is the culinary specialist. She processes raw food ingredients into cooked meals that provide significantly more nourishment than raw food, and she can craft special buff meals that provide temporary stat bonuses. Her most important role is producing Rations — long-lasting food items that do not spoil and are ideal for extended sailing trips.
Unlock Location and Quest
Thara is found on the market pier of Tidewatch Harbor, in the southern Coastal Jungle. Her unlock is the simplest of all workers — she does not have a formal quest. Instead, bring her 10 Scallops and 5 Cloth Scraps as a "recruitment gift." She joins your base immediately upon receiving these items. Scallops are easy to beachcomb, making Thara the first worker most players unlock.
Workstation: Kitchen
The Kitchen is a lightweight workstation, easy to build early in the game:
- Tier 1: Planks x10, Stone x15, Coarse Rope x5
- Tier 2: Planks x25, Stone x30, Iron Ingot x5, Copper Pot x1
- Tier 3: Planks x40, Iron Ingot x10, Copper Pot x2, Spice Bundle x3
Production Outputs
| Input Material | Output Product | Processing Time | Effect |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scallop x2 | Cooked Scallop x1 | 15 seconds | +25 nourishment (vs +10 raw) |
| Raw Meat x2 + Salt x1 | Salted Meat x1 | 30 seconds | +40 nourishment, no spoil timer |
| Raw Meat x3 + Herb x2 | Hearty Stew x1 | 60 seconds | +60 nourishment, +10% stamina regen 10 min |
| Ration Pack x5 + Herb x3 | Ship Rations x10 | 90 seconds | +20 nourishment each, does not spoil |
| Fish x3 + Spice x1 | Spiced Fish x1 | 25 seconds | +35 nourishment, +5% speed 5 min |
Set the Cook to produce Ship Rations whenever you are planning a long sailing session. Rations are the most efficient food for sailing because they stack well (20 per cargo slot), provide moderate nourishment, and never spoil. Running out of food at sea is a slow death spiral — always stock Rations before departure.
Worker 4: Gunpowder Expert Dex
Dex is the explosive specialist and arguably the most impactful worker for players focused on naval combat. He produces gunpowder (a valuable trade commodity), fire shot ammunition (used in cannon combat), and Repair Kits (essential for ship maintenance). Having Dex means you never need to manually craft ammunition or repair supplies again — just keep his input storage stocked with raw materials.
Unlock Location and Quest
Dex is found at the cavern entrance of Sunken Hollow, on the southwest islands. To unlock him, complete "Boomtown," a quest chain that requires you to clear a nearby pirate cave of enemies, retrieve a stolen powder keg, and return it to Dex. The cave has enemies around level 8-12, so come prepared with decent armor and weapons. This is the hardest worker unlock in the game, but the payoff is enormous.
Workstation: Powder Mill
The Powder Mill is a dangerous-looking workstation (there are occasional visual spark effects when it is running). Building it requires:
- Tier 1: Planks x25, Iron Ingots x10, Stone x20, Coal x10
- Tier 2: Planks x45, Iron Ingots x20, Stone x40, Coal x25, Steel Ingot x5
- Tier 3: Planks x65, Steel Ingots x15, Stone x60, Coal x40, Sulfur x10
Production Outputs
| Input Material | Output Product | Processing Time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coal x3 + Sulfur x2 | Gunpowder x1 | 45 seconds | Trade commodity, 16g sell value |
| Gunpowder x2 + Cloth x1 | Fire Shot x5 | 60 seconds | Cannon ammo, DOT damage |
| Iron Ingot x2 + Plank x1 | Repair Kit x1 | 30 seconds | Restores 100 HP per kit |
| Gunpowder x5 + Iron Ingot x3 | Explosive Barrel x1 | 120 seconds | Throwable, deals 200 AoE damage |
| Coal x1 + Iron Ingot x1 | Charcoal Block x2 | 15 seconds | Furnace fuel, speeds smelting |
The Powder Mill can explode if overstocked. If you place more than 50 units of Gunpowder in the Powder Mill's storage, there is a small chance of an explosion that destroys the mill, damages nearby structures, and kills the worker. You will need to rebuild the mill and reassign Dex. Keep gunpowder stock below 40 units at all times and empty the output regularly.
Worker Comparison Table
Use this table to plan your hiring order and resource allocation:
| Worker | Unlock Difficulty | Workstation Cost (T1) | Best Output | Hire Priority |

| Alchemist Mira | Medium (short quest) | Planks x20, Copper x10 | Refined Salt (trading profit) | 2nd (early-mid game) |
| Armorer Gorm | Medium (material delivery) | Planks x30, Iron x15 | Metal Components (ship upgrades) | 3rd (mid game) |
| Gunpowder Dex | Hard (combat quest) | Planks x25, Iron x10 | Gunpowder + Repair Kits | 4th (mid-late game) |
Efficiency Optimization Setup
Building workstations is only half the battle — optimizing their placement and input flow is what turns a basic setup into a production powerhouse. Here are the key efficiency principles:
Workstation Placement
- Cluster workstations near storage chests. Place input storage chests adjacent to each workstation so you can quickly deposit raw materials. The less time you spend running between storage and workstations, the more efficient your base operates.
- Keep everything within bonfire radius. This is the fundamental rule of Windrose base building. If a workstation drifts outside the bonfire's light, it stops working. Plan your layout with the bonfire at the center and workstations radiating outward.
- Separate input and output storage. Use dedicated chests for raw material input and finished product output near each workstation. Labeling your chests (using signs or banners) prevents confusion when managing multiple production lines.
- Leave room for tier upgrades. Workstation tier upgrades increase the physical size of the station. Leave at least one block of space around each workstation when building, or you will need to demolish and rebuild when upgrading.
Automated Production Chains
The real power of the worker system emerges when you chain multiple workers together into production lines. A production chain is a sequence where one worker's output becomes another worker's input, creating a fully automated pipeline from raw materials to finished products.
Chain 1: Ammunition Production Line
This chain produces cannon ammunition from raw mined resources:
- Input: You mine Coal and Sulfur from Foothills deposits.
- Gunpowder Expert (Dex) processes Coal + Sulfur into Gunpowder.
- Gunpowder Expert (Dex) processes Gunpowder + Cloth into Fire Shot.
- Output: Collect Fire Shot from Dex's output storage and load it onto your ship.
This chain requires one worker (Dex) and two input materials. It is the simplest useful chain and the first one you should set up once Dex is hired.
Chain 2: Trading Refinement Line
This chain maximizes trading profit by refining raw commodities:
- Input: Buy Raw Salt at Tidewatch for 5g per unit.
- Alchemist (Mira) processes Raw Salt into Refined Salt.
- Output: Sell Refined Salt at Ember Bay for 12g per unit (+140% value).
Chain 3: Full Ship Supply Line
This advanced chain produces everything you need for extended sailing:
- Cook (Thara) produces Ship Rations from raw food and herbs.
- Armorer (Gorm) produces Metal Components for repairs and upgrades.
- Gunpowder Expert (Dex) produces Repair Kits and Fire Shot.
- Output: Collect Rations, Repair Kits, Fire Shot, and Metal Components — a complete sailing supply package.
Set up all four workstations in a square formation around a central bonfire, with a storage chest on each side facing the relevant workstation. This "hub and spoke" layout minimizes walking distance between stations and keeps everything within bonfire radius. It is the most efficient base layout for worker automation.
Worker Management in Multiplayer
In multiplayer, worker management requires coordination between players to avoid conflicts and maximize output. Here are the rules and best practices for multiplayer worker systems:
- Workers are shared across the crew. All players in the same crew can interact with any workstation and collect from any output storage. You do not need separate workers for each player.
- Only one player needs to unlock each worker. Once a worker is unlocked and assigned to a workstation, they are available to the entire crew. Coordinate unlock efforts so different players pursue different workers simultaneously.
- Input storage is communal. Any player can deposit raw materials into a workstation's input storage. This means one player can specialize in resource gathering while another manages the base.
- Assign roles for efficiency. The most efficient multiplayer setups have one "gatherer" who brings raw materials to the base and one "manager" who distributes materials to the correct workstations and collects finished products. With a 3-4 person crew, you can have dedicated gatherers for each biome.
- Communication is critical. Call out when you are depositing materials and when you are collecting finished products. In a busy base with four workers running simultaneously, it is easy to accidentally take products another player needs.
Workstations do NOT transfer between bases. If you build a new base at a different location, you must rebuild all workstations and reassign all workers. Workers do follow you between bases, but the workstations themselves must be constructed fresh. Plan your permanent base location carefully before investing in Tier 2 and Tier 3 workstation upgrades.
Upgrading Workstations
Each workstation has three tiers. Upgrading unlocks faster processing times, new production recipes, and higher-quality output versions of existing products. Tier 2 is accessible once you have access to Iron Ingots and Steel Ingots from the Foothills biome. Tier 3 requires rare materials like Silver and Gold Ingots, which become available in the late game.
Upgrade priorities depend on your playstyle. For traders, upgrade the Alchemy Lab first for faster Refined Salt production. For combat-focused players, upgrade the Powder Mill first for faster Repair Kit and Fire Shot output. The Kitchen is generally the lowest upgrade priority because Ship Rations from a Tier 1 Kitchen are already sufficient for most sailing needs.
With all four workers operational and their workstations optimized, your base becomes a self-sustaining production hub that frees you to focus on the parts of Windrose that matter most to you — whether that is sailing, trading, fighting, or exploring. Invest in your workers early and they will pay dividends for the entire game.
