Welcome to Windrose. Your first three hours set the foundation for your entire playthrough, so follow this walkthrough carefully to avoid common beginner mistakes. When you create your character, choose the Merchant background for a 10 percent gold bonus on all trades, which provides the most universal benefit throughout the game. The other backgrounds offer niche bonuses that are less impactful early on.
After the opening cutscene, you wake up on the starter island. Follow the quest marker to the Harbor Master, who gives you the quest Last Light. This quest teaches basic movement, interaction, and gathering. Collect 5 wood logs and 3 stone from the beach, then craft a stone axe at the crafting table. The stone axe is your first tool and allows you to gather hardwood, which is essential for ship building.
Continue following the main questline through the tutorial sequence. You will learn combat by fighting hostile crabs on the beach, which are low-level enemies that teach you the dodge and attack mechanics. Practice dodging their attacks by pressing the dodge button perpendicular to their lunge direction. Each crab provides 20 XP, and killing 5 of them gets you to level 2.
At level 3, you receive the Set Sail quest, which requires you to gather materials for your first Ketch. You need 50 hardwood planks and 10 rope. Chop hardwood trees using your stone axe (upgrade to an iron axe as soon as you can craft one for faster gathering), and collect hemp fiber from plants along the coast. Craft the planks at a sawmill and rope at a ropeworks station, both available at the starter island workshop.
Once you have all materials, build your Ketch at the shipyard on the starter island beach. The construction takes about 15 minutes and walks you through each component. When your Ketch is complete, board it and sail to Castellan Bay, the first major hub. This journey takes 5 minutes and marks the end of your starter island phase. You should be level 4 with approximately 6,000 XP.
- Choose Merchant background for gold bonus
- Follow main questline exclusively
- Craft iron axe as soon as possible
- Gather 50 planks and 10 rope for Ketch
- Sail to Castellan Bay at level 4

Hours 4 to 6: Castellan Bay and Faction Selection
Arriving at Castellan Bay opens up the game significantly. Your first priority is to visit the quest board in the town center and accept every available quest. Do not start any quests yet; just accept them all so you can identify overlapping objectives. Most quests in Castellan Bay involve gathering, combat, or delivery tasks in the surrounding area, and many can be completed simultaneously.
Visit the three faction representatives in Castellan Bay: the Merchant Guild office near the docks, the Navy barracks on the hill, and the Pirate Brotherhood tavern in the back alleys. Speak with each to learn about their benefits, then join one. For beginners, the Merchant Guild is strongly recommended because its delivery quests are the easiest and provide steady gold income to fund your progression.
Once you have joined a faction, start completing the Castellan Bay quests in batches. Group quests by location: if two quests require items from the same area, complete them together to save travel time. Turn in all completed quests at once, preferably after drinking an Explorer's Potion for the 50 percent XP boost on quest rewards.
During this phase, invest in your first real weapon. The iron sword, craftable at the blacksmith for 10 iron ingots, is a significant upgrade over the starter stone knife. If you prefer ranged combat, craft a wooden bow for 5 hardwood planks and 2 rope. Practice combat on the bandits that roam the roads outside Castellan Bay, who are level 5 to 7 and provide good early-game loot.
By the end of hour 6, you should be level 6 with approximately 15,000 XP, have joined a faction, and have 500 to 1,000 gold from quest rewards. Your Ketch should be equipped with at least 4 cannons and a basic cargo hold. You are now ready to begin faction reputation grinding and mid-game exploration.
| Activity | Time | XP Gained | Gold Earned |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter island quests | 3 hrs | 6,000 | 200 |
| Castellan Bay quests | 2 hrs | 5,000 | 500 |
| Faction delivery quests | 1 hr | 2,000 | 300 |
| Combat and loot | Ongoing | 2,000 | 200 |
Hours 7 to 8: Resource Outpost and Trade Runs
With your faction joined and basic gear acquired, your next priority is establishing a resource outpost. Sail your Ketch to Shipwright's Rest, the island east of Castellan Bay. This island has abundant hardwood trees, a protected bay, and enough flat ground for building. Construct a sawmill, a storage chest, and a small shelter for a fast-travel point.
The sawmill converts hardwood logs into planks at a 2:1 ratio, which is essential for your future Brig construction. Spend 30 minutes chopping trees and stockpiling planks at your outpost. With an iron axe, you can gather 50 to 60 logs in 30 minutes, which converts to 25 to 30 planks. This stockpile will grow over time and significantly reduce the grinding needed when you are ready to build a Brig.
While at your outpost, begin your first trade runs. The Castellan Bay to Ironport route is the most profitable early-game route, earning 100 to 200 gold per trip with your Ketch's 20 cargo slots. Buy goods at Castellan Bay (typically salted fish or lumber) and sell them at Ironport for a 50 to 100 percent profit margin. Each round trip takes 20 minutes by Ketch.
Complete faction delivery quests during your trade runs, as many delivery routes follow the same path. This double-dipping maximizes your income per hour, combining trade profit with quest rewards. By the end of hour 8, you should have 1,500 to 2,500 gold and 100 to 150 hardwood planks stockpiled at your outpost.
Use some of your gold to upgrade your Ketch. Purchase 4 standard cannons from the Castellan Bay shipwright for 200 gold total, and install an expanded cargo hold for 100 gold to increase cargo capacity from 20 to 30 slots. These upgrades pay for themselves within 5 trade runs and make your Ketch significantly more capable.
- Build resource outpost on Shipwright's Rest
- Construct sawmill and storage chest
- Stockpile 100+ hardwood planks
- Run Castellan Bay to Ironport trade route
- Upgrade Ketch with cannons and expanded cargo
Hours 9 to 10: First Boss and Brig Preparation
Your final two hours of the beginner phase are about pushing into mid-game content and preparing for your Brig. At level 8, you unlock the world boss quests, which are your first real challenge. The Swamp Lurker, located at the Cursed Swamps entrance, is the easiest boss and the recommended first target.
Before attempting the Swamp Lurker, prepare thoroughly. Craft 10 healing potions from herbs found near Castellan Bay, equip a fire-enchanted weapon (the fire sword is craftable at the blacksmith for 20 iron ingots and 1 fire essence), and bring a shield for blocking. The Swamp Lurker is level 15, so you will be fighting above your level, but with fire damage and proper dodging it is manageable at level 8.
The Swamp Lurker fight takes about 10 minutes at level 8. Focus on hitting its glowing underside weak spot when it rears up, and dodge its lunging attacks by rolling perpendicular. After defeating it, you receive the Cursed Key (required for later quests), 100 gold, and a random uncommon item. The 1,000 XP from the quest reward pushes you to level 9 or 10.
With the boss defeated and your trade income established, begin serious Brig preparation. Check your faction reputation: you should be close to rank 2 (500 reputation points) from completing delivery quests during your trade runs. Once you reach rank 2, purchase the Brig blueprint from your faction vendor for 500 gold.
Review your resource stockpile. You need 400 hardwood planks, 100 iron ingots, 60 rope, 40 sailcloth, and 20 tar for a Brig. By now you should have 100 to 150 planks and 30 to 50 ingots stockpiled. Plan your remaining gathering sessions to collect the rest, and you will be ready to build your Brig within the next 5 to 10 hours of gameplay. The beginner phase is complete; you are now a capable Windrose captain ready for mid-game challenges.
