Windrose Faction & Reputation Guide — All 5 Factions Explained

Factions are the backbone of Windrose's world. Every major port, every trading company, and every pirate band belongs to one of the game's major factions, and your reputation with them determines everything from shop prices to available quests to whether you get shot at on sight.

The Major Factions

Windrose features five major factions, each with its own territory, goals, and attitude toward you as a player. You will interact with all of them to some degree, but most players end up specializing in two or three based on their playstyle.

The Merchant Guild

The Merchant Guild is the closest thing Windrose has to a "good guy" faction, and they are the easiest to start with. Based in the coastal trading cities, the Guild controls legitimate commerce, runs the Wharves, and maintains trade routes between ports.

Merchant Guild reputation is primarily gained by completing delivery quests, trading legitimate goods between their ports, and hunting pirates that prey on their shipping. Higher reputation unlocks:

  • Discounts at all Guild-affiliated shops (up to 25% at max rank)
  • Exclusive trade routes with higher profit margins
  • Access to rare crafting materials not found elsewhere
  • Guild-specific ship skins and figureheads
Trading Tip

The fastest way to grind Merchant Guild reputation early is the "spice run" between Port Victoria and Saltspray. Buy spice cheap in Saltspray, sell high in Port Victoria, and repeat. Each run builds reputation while making solid profit.

The Admiralty

The Admiralty is the naval arm of the coastal kingdoms, and they take their job very seriously. They patrol shipping lanes, hunt pirates, and maintain fortresses across the Foothills biome. If you like naval combat and want access to the best military hardware, the Admiralty is your faction.

Gain Admiralty reputation by:

  • Completing patrol missions in their territory
  • Sinking pirate ships (especially Freebooters)
  • Defending merchant convoys under attack
  • Turning in bounty targets alive (bonus reputation)

High Admiralty rank unlocks military-grade ship upgrades, officer-class crew recruits, and access to restricted fortresses with elite vendors.

The Freebooters

On the opposite end of the law, the Freebooters are a loose coalition of pirates, smugglers, and ne'er-do-wells operating out of hidden coves in the Archipelago. They are not "evil" — they are just aggressively entrepreneurial — but working with them will tank your reputation with the Admiralty and the Merchant Guild.

Freebooter reputation is gained by smuggling contraband, raiding merchant ships, and completing jobs for pirate captains. The rewards are access to the black market (where you can sell stolen cargo at premium prices), unique cursed weapons, and the best smuggling ship hulls in the game.

Reputation Warning

Freebooter and Admiralty reputation are mutually opposed. Gaining rank with one loses it with the other. You can max both eventually through very specific grind paths, but it is far more efficient to pick one and commit for your first playthrough.

The Explorer's League

The Explorer's League is a scholarly organization dedicated to mapping, cataloging, and understanding the world of Windrose. They are neutral in the pirate-versus-navy conflict, and they will work with anyone who brings them useful charts, specimens, or discoveries.

This is the best faction for players who prefer exploration over combat. Gain reputation by:

  • Discovering new islands and charting unexplored waters
  • Collecting and turning in biological specimens
  • Completing survey missions
  • Finding ancient ruins and reporting back

Explorer's League rewards include improved maps that show resource locations, unique crafting recipes for research tools, and access to the League's archive of lore and world secrets.

The Ash Confederacy

The Ash Confederacy is the endgame faction, based in the Ashlands biome. They are a hardened group of survivors, warriors, and smiths who have learned to thrive in the most hostile environment in the game. You will not gain meaningful reputation with them until you reach the Ashlands, which requires a Brigantine or better.

The Confederacy offers the best gear in the game — legendary weapons, elite armor, and endgame ship upgrades — in exchange for Ashlands resources and completed bounties on the biome's deadliest creatures.

How Reputation Works

Each faction has six reputation ranks, from Hostile at the bottom to Champion at the top. You gain and lose reputation points based on your actions, and crossing thresholds moves you up or down a rank.

RankReputation RangeTypical Unlocks
HostileBelow 0Attacked on sight, no services
Neutral0 – 999Basic services, standard prices
Friendly1,000 – 2,99910% discount, basic quests
Honored3,000 – 5,99915% discount, intermediate gear
Revered6,000 – 9,99920% discount, advanced quests
Champion10,000+25% discount, best rewards, unique titles

Faction Oppositions

Some factions are opposed, meaning gaining reputation with one costs you reputation with another. The primary oppositions are:

  • Merchant Guild ↔ Freebooters — Legitimate trade vs. smuggling and piracy
  • Admiralty ↔ Freebooters — Law enforcement vs. piracy (strongest opposition)

The Explorer's League and Ash Confederacy are neutral and do not oppose any other faction.

Daily & Weekly Faction Activities

To efficiently grind reputation, focus on these repeatable activities:

  • Daily Delivery Quests — Available from faction NPCs every in-game day. Quick, reliable reputation gains.
  • Weekly Bounties — Higher difficulty, much higher reputation reward. Reset every Monday.
  • Trade Routes — Passive reputation gain from trading between faction-aligned ports.
  • World Events — Random events like pirate attacks or rescue missions that award faction reputation.
Efficiency Tip

Stack your faction activities. Pick up all available dailies at a port, then do them in an order that minimizes travel time. A well-planned route can net you 500+ reputation points per play session without much extra effort.

Factions are one of the deepest systems in Windrose, and they give the world a real sense of consequence. Your choices matter, and building reputation with the right faction can dramatically change how you experience the game. Pick wisely.
