Windrose features three main bosses that serve as biome gatekeepers, plus a roaming scene boss in the Cursed Swamps. Each boss requires specific gear tiers and distinct combat strategies. This guide covers every encounter in detail, including gear prerequisites, attack patterns, and step-by-step win conditions.
Boss Overview
| Boss | Location | Required Gear | Difficulty | Unlocks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Thomas Richards | Coastal Jungle | Copper | Easy | Foothills access |
| Israel Hands | Foothills | Iron | Medium | Cursed Swamps (Charon's Obol) |
| High Priestess | Cursed Swamps | Steel | Hard | Endgame progression |
| Swamp Creature | Cursed Swamps (roaming) | Iron+ | Medium | Loot drops |
Thomas Richards β Coastal Jungle
Thomas Richards is the first boss encounter and serves as the gatekeeper to the Foothills biome. He is a straightforward fight designed to test your understanding of basic combat mechanics β blocking, dodging, and stamina management.
Gear Requirements
- Minimum: Full copper armor and a copper weapon. Starting gear is not sufficient for a comfortable fight, though skilled players can manage with partial copper equipment.
- Recommended: Full copper set with a healing potion or two in your inventory. The 4-buff stack is not necessary here but helps if you are undergeared.
Fight Mechanics
Thomas fights with a single weapon and uses a mix of horizontal swings and overhead strikes. His attack patterns are telegraphed clearly, giving you plenty of time to react. The fight lasts approximately 2 to 3 minutes with appropriate gear.
Strategy
- Perfect block his horizontal swings. This staggers him briefly and opens a window for 2-3 counterattacks.
- Dodge his overhead strike β it has a longer wind-up but deals significant damage if it connects.
- Manage stamina carefully. Do not chain more than 3-4 attacks after a successful block, or you will not have enough stamina to block his next swing.
- Heal between phases if needed. Thomas does not have a healing phase, so taking a moment to use a potion is safe.
Israel Hands β Foothills
Israel Hands is a significant step up in difficulty. He introduces phase-based combat with distinct ranged and melee phases, requiring you to adapt your strategy mid-fight. Defeating him drops Charon's Obol, the key item needed to access the Cursed Swamps.
Gear Requirements
- Minimum: Full iron armor and an iron weapon. Copper gear will result in very long, risky fights with high death probability.
- Recommended: Full iron set, iron weapon, food buff, and at least 3-4 healing potions. The 4-buff stack is recommended for your first attempt.
Phase 1: Ranged Phase
Israel Hands opens the fight at range using a firearm. During this phase, he fires shots at you from a distance. The critical rule for this phase is: do not block, just run.
Use cover if available, but prioritize closing distance. Once you reach melee range, the ranged phase ends and Israel transitions to melee combat.
Phase 2: Melee Phase
In melee range, Israel fights with a blade using aggressive combos. His melee patterns are faster and more complex than Thomas Richards.
- Dodge his opening slash β it comes out fast and chains into a follow-up.
- Wait for the thrust. Israel has a distinct thrusting attack that is highly telegraphed. Dodge to the side and respond with a thrust of your own. The thrust window is your primary damage opportunity.
- Do not greed. After landing 2 hits, back off and reposition. Israel recovers quickly and will punish extended attack chains.
- Heal between phase transitions. When he disengages to start the ranged phase again, use the gap to heal and reapply consumables.
Phase Cycling
The fight cycles between ranged and melee phases. Each time Israel retreats to ranged distance, he fires a volley of shots before re-engaging in melee. Use the ranged phase to heal and reposition, then close distance for another melee exchange. Repeat this cycle until defeated.
High Priestess β Cursed Swamps
The High Priestess is the hardest boss in the game. She features unique mechanics that deviate from standard combat, requiring a specific approach rather than raw damage output. This fight is a gear check, a mechanics check, and a preparation check all at once.
Gear Requirements
- Minimum: Full steel armor and a steel weapon. Anything less will result in extremely fast deaths.
- Recommended: Full steel set, blunt weapon (mace or club for bonus damage), Drake's Double-Barreled Pistol for ranged attacks, full 4-buff stack (Rested + Food + Elixir + Great Healing Potion), anti-plague consumables, and 5+ healing potions.
Core Mechanic: Yellow Pustules
The High Priestess is covered in yellow pustules that act as her defense mechanism. You cannot damage her directly through conventional attacks. Instead, you must follow a specific sequence:
- Attack the yellow pustules to destroy them. Each pustule has its own HP pool and must be destroyed individually.
- Destroying pustules staggers the Priestess, causing her to open her mouth and expose a weak point.
- Attack the open mouth during the stagger window for massive damage. This is the only way to deal meaningful damage to her.
- She recovers and regenerates pustules, and the cycle repeats.
Weapon Recommendations
- Blunt weapons deal bonus damage to the Priestess. A steel mace or club is your best melee option for both pustule breaking and mouth damage.
- Drake's Double-Barreled Pistol is the optimal ranged weapon for this fight. It allows you to destroy pustules from a safe distance without needing to close into melee range. This is particularly valuable because getting close to the Priestess exposes you to her plague attacks.
Anti-Plague Consumables
Bring multiple anti-plague consumables and reapply them as the fight progresses. The plague stacks decay over time, but the Priestess applies them frequently enough that you need consistent protection throughout the entire encounter.
Step-by-Step Strategy
- Pre-fight prep: Apply full 4-buff stack and anti-plague consumable before engaging.
- Open with ranged pustule shots. Use Drake's Double-Barreled Pistol to destroy 2-3 pustules from distance before she closes in.
- When staggered, close in with blunt weapon and attack the open mouth for maximum damage.
- Retreat when she recovers and repeat the pustule-breaking process.
- Monitor plague stacks. If you see your health dropping faster than expected, reapply anti-plague consumables immediately.
- Heal during transitions between pustule phases. The brief window when she regenerates new pustules is your safest healing moment.
Swamp Creature β Cursed Swamps Roaming Boss
The Swamp Creature is a roaming boss found in the Cursed Swamps biome. Unlike the three main bosses, it does not gate progression, but it drops valuable loot and provides a significant challenge.
Gear Requirements
- Minimum: Iron gear or better. The Swamp Creature has high health and deals substantial damage.
- Recommended: Steel gear preferred. Bring anti-plague consumables since the fight takes place in the Cursed Swamps environment.
Fight Strategy
The Swamp Creature is a large, lumbering enemy with powerful but slow attacks. Its size means many of its attacks have wide hitboxes, so dodging requires more distance than against humanoid bosses.
- Stay mobile. The Creature's attacks cover large areas. Constant movement is safer than trying to block.
- Attack from behind after it commits to a swing. The recovery time on its heavy attacks provides a solid damage window.
- Watch for the grab. The Swamp Creature has a grab attack that deals massive damage and immobilizes you. Dodge sideways when you see the wind-up animation.
